Elliot Martin is studying Engineering at Cowley 6th Form College in St Helens, and recently completed work experience with us on site at Prescot town centre.

Our works in Prescot are part of our Eccleston Street Public Realm Improvement scheme which focuses on improving the town’s high street paving.

What work have you been learning/completing whilst on site with HA Civils?

Taking measurements of the depths of setts for paving. Also using the theodolite (surveying instrument) for measuring distances for placements of setts. This has been useful when working out where about to place the cog shapes (part of the paving pattern) for the high street (a reference to Prescot’s history in watch making).

I’ve communicated with team members, we have discussed what materials should be used and shared advice on ideas, along with proofing work.

What have you enjoyed most about the experience?

I liked working on site and gaining invaluable practical experience. I’ve also enjoyed working with the theodolite with learning how to use the device. HA Civils use a Leica Icon Robotic Surveying Total Station which is innovative tech and allows a site worker to use it as a remote control, needing only one operator rather than the traditional two-person operation.

What have you found most challenging?

Measuring the depths of setts can be quite difficult. Plus I worked on the one of the hottest weeks of the year so that was also challenging!

Why did you complete work experience with us?

I wanted to gain insight into what it’s like to be a Civil Engineer. Getting involved with working on site appealed to me.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to complete work experience with us?

It’s been great as you learn more practical work by being out on the job rather than reading it in a book. The team helped if I made a mistake and have been useful.

Would you recommend your experience?

Yes, I’ve been working on site in a busy location (town centre) which has given me a clearer idea of the civil engineering working environment. I’ve enjoyed working out solutions to problems.

Elliot contacted us enquiring about a work experience opportunity using our website. We are happy to have helped Elliot gain experience and wish him luck with his future endeavours.
