HA Civils and Huyton Asphalt are supporters of the Slow down for Bobby campaign, which encourages road users to drive at a safe speed around the surroundings of schools. On 24th October 2014 a young boy called Bobby Colleran was hit by a car. Bobby was on his way home from school, walking by the road outside his school with his mum Joanne, when he was knocked over and killed. Bobby was just 6 years old.
Teaming up with The Bobby Colleran Trust, we have donated money for hi vis vests, to be worn by school children when walking around the school gates to highlight their visibility, going to school and returning from it. The trust was registered as a charity in September 2015. As founding members of the Trust, Bobby’s parents fought hard and dedicated themselves to improving Road Safety for all children. They have campaigned for safer roads outside all schools and have been greatly supported by the people of Liverpool and England. Parents, teachers and people, in general, are aware of how dangerous school runs can be and fear for their children’s safety. The aim of the charity is to have 20mph “Bobby Zone” outside every school in the country. Many schools have banners supporting the campaign shown on the railings of their schools.
Bobby was the son of Huyton Asphalt staff member David Colleran. Other family members like Damian Colleran (Bobby’s uncle) also work for Huyton Asphalt. HA Civils’ is part of the Huyton Asphalt group of companies. Huyton Asphalt’s Managing Director James Blennerhasset and his brother Michael, are relatives of Bobby Colleran. This is an issue close to their heart, so as a company we have helped with the campaign as much as possible. As part of the campaign we installed new speed tables outside of the school where the fatal incident occurred, which included all free of charge labour from the gang operatives and free of charge material from our supplier Tarmac. We have also held various fund-raising events including sponsored half marathons, dress down days and local football events.
We have a Blue for Bobby day, were our staff wear blue in support of Bobby’s cause and promote donations to the trust for the Slow down for Bobby campaign.
There was a Bobby football Tournament recently on Saturday 1st June 2019 at King George V Playing Fields in Huyton, which was open to the public. For more information about The Bobby Colleran Trust visit www.thebobbycollerantrust.org.uk/
